TGIF: Book Appeal

February 3, 2012 Meme, TGIF 6

TGIF is a weekly meme to re-cap the week’s posts & to propose a question for our followers. It is run by Ginger at GReads.

Book Appeal: When you’re browsing goodreads, the library, or another blogger’s reviews, what grabs your attention to make you want to read it?

If I am just browsing goodreads I look at the cover and synopsis.
I know it’s shallow but a pretty cover always grabs my attention (Anna Dressed in Blood).
For me, the shorter the synopsis is, the better.  I get disinterested in long synopsis, which leads to me not wanting to read the book.  I have a tendency to fall for mysterious synopsis (The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer) or funny (Can You Keep a Secret?).  If the book falls in the maybe category I look at the reviews.  I typically focus on the 2-4 star reviews because 1 star reviews are typically “this book is really stupid” and 5 star are typically “omg this is the best book ever” with no reasoning given as to why.

When I’m looking at blogger reviews I look at the cover and I put more consideration on the review, as I tend to follow blogs that I share similar tastes with.
I still look at the cover first.  Then I’ll read their review.  What pulls me the most in blog reviews is the excitement that the reviewer generates about the book.  It’s not about just saying a book was great, it’s feeling it too.

Interesting answers. I must confess that I’m also swayed by book covers though I rarely, very rarely, read a book based on the look of a cover alone. On the opposite side of the coin as it were ……. The over hype of books is beginning to put me off reading certain books.

I like blurbs of an average length, not inordinately short or long. I think if the right details are thrown into it,I usually decide to try a book :)

Oh, interesting criteria — the shorter the synopsis the better. Makes sense. If a summary is only a few sentences long, but manages to catch your attention anyway, that’s the sign of a book with potential! :D
