Blog Hop: Writing Reviews & FF: Unread a Book

June 22, 2012 Blog Hop, Feature and Follow, Meme 27

Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop is hosted by Jen at Crazy-For-Books.  I met Jen at BEA and she’s seriously awesome!

Blogging Question: Do you immediately write a review upon finishing a book or do you wait and write multiple reviews at once?

I try to write them within a day or two of finish the book, a week at the most.  I try to take notes but if I’m really into a book I tend to forget to take a minute to note stuff down so if I don’t write the review write away I will forget things.  If I know I don’t have a lot of time I will at least start a post and just write little short phrases to help me remember stuff when I do have time to write the review.

Feature & Follow is hosted by Parajunkee’s View and Alison Can Read. Every week they feature a new blogger and ask a question.  Learn more about Feature & Follow.
Q: If you could “unread” a book, which one would it be? Is it because you want to start over and experience it again for the first time? Or because it was THAT bad?

Today’s features: Head Stuck in a Book and Books and Blossoms.

imageSeveral months ago I read Sweet Valley Confidential: Ten Years Later.  I LOVED Sweet Valley High growing up.  I read all the books and I imagined that when I started high school it would be just like Sweet Valley High (note: this turned out to not be true).  I was pretty excited when I saw this book was coming out because it gave me a chance to relive a childhood favorite and catch up with the gang.

Sweet Valley Confidential was flat out awful!  I wished I never had read it because it ruined a childhood favorite.  And just so that y’all don’t think I’m crazy it has a Goodreads rating of 2.28.

Did you know that there’s going to be a second Sweet Valley Confidential???!!!???!!! I am so pissed! Because part of me, no lie, wants to READ it on the off chance that some mistakes have been fixed… I need a book intervention. Stat!

I use to take notes. I began to feel like it took me away from the story. Now I find myself taking tiny notes every once and awhile. I’m glad you brought the issue up about taking notes or not taking notes. I find what’s really important stays in my head anyway.

Holy crap! 2.28? That’s one of the lowest Goodreads ratings I’ve ever heard of! Eesh. Was it the writing or what they did to the characters that was awful?

  4. Jaskirat@SeeitORreadit

Wow a 2.28 is almost a 1!!!! Well that is quite low! So sad to hear you didn’t enjoy it :-(

Following your blog! Feel free to stop by mine!

Hi! Thanks for stopping by my blog (Ketch’s Book Nook)!

I don’t usually take notes while I read; not unless I’m beta reading for a fellow author. But it’s definitely an a good system to work with. I just get to absorbed in the novel to even try. :)

  6. Vonnie Rivera

I need to take more notes with my books so my reviews are easier.

Sweet Valley? I don’t think I’ve read any of those but I do recall watching Sweet Valley High. Is that the same thing?

Loving your blog. I am now following you:D

This post made me laugh so much. I can’t think of a book I want to unread, so I didn’t participate this week. I knew you were going to pick this one.

  8. Bittner

I have Sweet Valley but I haven’t read it yet. Andrea and I were trying to reread some of the older classic ones before we read the new one.
And I really need to start writing partial drafts for my reviews after I read a book because otherwise I get so overwhelmed I end up writing nothing at all! Case and point – this entire month!!!

  9. Helene @ Helene's World of Books

I never heard of Sweet Valley, but I won’t be checking it out ;). My FF

I’ve tagged you in the Liebster Award. Hope you like it :)

    Happy Reading!

I always take notes when I’m reading. It’s just a way of remembering all my reactions.

And if I could unread a book, it would be American Psycho. That book was just way too disturbing for me.

  11. Andrea @ The Overstuffed Bookcase

I take pretty detailed notes but I do end up not taking them if I’m really into the story. I try to write the review pretty soon after I finish the book but I got a bit behind after the readathon and that set me back. I still have one book that I need to review that I read a few weeks ago, but I’ve got some pretty good notes for it, so I should be okay.

As Bittner said, she and I decided to reread the SVH books before reading Confidential so I went on eBay and got a deal – 32 books for like $38 or something. I’ve read about half of them and I would like to read the rest but they’re just not as great as I remembered. But I’m thinking I might make them into a kind of throwback feature on my blog when I start reading them again. And I still would like to read Confidential even though I’ve heard from you and others that it is horrible. But I’ll get it from Bittner or from the library, don’t worry!

Just don’t pay for it! Please! I beg of you!

I have the same problem, I tried rereading a few books that I loved when I was younger and I don’t love them so much anymore so now I just stay away. I like the memory of loving the books.
