I Love the 90’s, and You Should Too!

July 17, 2012 Misc 20

This weeks Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by The Broke and the Bookish) is Top Ten Books For People Who Like X Book. I had a hard time with a similar topic a few weeks ago and I would probably just repeat some of those so rather than bore you all with a similar list I’m giving you the top ten reasons why I love (and miss) the 90’s.

In no particular order.

1. TLC
You couldn’t possibly get through the 90’s without a little TLC.  This was my first CD… ever.  It was released in 1994 and is still one of my favorites.  It’s a tough call between “Creep” and “Waterfalls” as to which one is my favorite.

2. Hocus Pocus
It’s not Halloween without a little Hocus Pocus.  I’ve watched it every year since it’s release in 1993.  I’m not kidding.  Every.  Year.  If you’ve never seen this movie, why not?

3. Kristi Yamaguchi
She won gold in the 92 Winter Olympics.  I was completely obsessed with figure skating and I even wrote her a letter.

4. OJ Simpson
Whether you think he was guilty or not guilty doesn’t really matter.  He was all anyone talked about my freshman year in high school.  It was everywhere, you couldn’t escape him and that glove if you wanted too.

5. Nirvana
Nevermind was released in 1991, but I wasn’t really into them until after Kurt Cobain died.  I was in middle school listening to the radio at a friends when they were doing a Nirvana marathon after his death and one listen of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was all it took for me to be hooked.  It’s one of my favorite songs ever, though I’m still not certain I know all the words.  Cobain wasn’t exactly articulate.

6. Slap Bracelets
What kid didn’t love these? What parent didn’t hate them?

7. Aqua “Barbie Girl”
Released in 1997 this song completely swept everyone away.  Then Mattel took offense and the song was pulled from the radio, but that only made the song more cool.  It’s ridiculous and fun, if you haven’t heard it you should check it out (the video is good for a laugh too).

8. Beverly Hills 90210
Oh Dylan.  Dylan wasn’t the nicest of the bunch but he was sooo cool.  Pretty much everything about this show was awesome, the Walsh’s, Kelli, Donna, Andrea, Steve, David and yeah, I just named them all off the top of my head.  My second favorite show of all time.

9. ER
My favorite TV show ever.  I won’t wow you all by naming all the characters again (cause really, there are tons).  Instead I’ll tell you my favorite episodes.  The one where Dr Ross saves the kids from drowning in the river, the train wreck episode, the one where Carter got stabbed (my all time favorite), just to name a few.

10. Office Space
Stapler anyone?  How about some flair?  Maybe you need a little extra cash?  Or maybe you have a boss that’s less than pleasant.

Watch the movie to find out what I’m talking about.

I made this list because yesterday, Jen Ryland/YA Romantics posted her review of Drain You which is pretty heavy on the 1990’s so that’s all I’ve been thinking about!  I hope you enjoyed the list.

Yes! This is fantastic. I want to give you a big ol’ high five. *high fives computer screen* *cleans hand print off computer screen* *looks around and hopes no one noticed*

    Anyway, awesome list.

Also, don’t go chasing waterfalls. Stick to the rivers and lakes you’re used to.

  2. KT's Reading Rainbow

OMG You are a 90210 fan too. I love 90210!!!! My nickname in high school was Kelly Taylor (I was a lot younger and thinner back then). We should do a 90210 party while listening to TLC and wearing snap bracelets!

  3. Kate@Midnight Book Girl

Hocus Pocus… it’s not just for Halloween anymore! I watch it several times a year, and I still love it. We’ll have to do the midnight Rocky Horror Show at BowTie around Halloween, they have these 3 chicks impersonating the Sanders sisters, and they lip-sync “I Put A Spell On You” as a pre-show act. Love it!

I was trying not to embarass myself too much by admitting that I watch Hocus Pocus year round. And I’m totally down with the Rocky Horror Show, (please don’t hit me) but I’ve never seen it.

And the episode when Carter was stabbed gave me chills! That was such a good episode! With that one girl who was on that Life Goes On what was her name? Kelly something?

    Hey remember pogs?

I’m not saying that they were a highlight of the 90’s but your list reminded me of them!

Dude. We are so much alike. I texted you but I think I figured out the answer to my question. I think I might be only a year older than you because I watched the O.J. Simpson verdict in my class in 10th grade…

Anyway, 1. YEssssss 2. I still love Thora Birch and Omri Katz, mostly for this movie. I like their other stuff, but this is the best! 3. I was more into gymnastics. Dominique Moceanu was the best!! Oh, and Kerri Strug! Who doesn’t remember that?? 4. Totally remember watching that in class. I still don’t know whether he was guilty or not but I feel that way about all of the public trials–I’m not on the jury so I don’t have all the evidence, so I can’t make an informed decision. But it was still fun to watch! 5.I loved Nirvana! But, like you, I didn’t get into them until pretty late. I think I started liking them right before he died… Still a great band. 6. I liked these until the fabric ripped and the band inside was uncomfortable! 7. I am going to have this song in my head for DAYS. Thank you so much. :P 8. I never really watched 90210. But I DID watch Party of Five and My So-Called Life. Such awesome shows! 9. I didn’t watch ER, either. 10. LOVE this movie. I can’t find my copy which needs to be rectified soon!

Great post, Kate! Maybe I should do one like this some time!

Ok 1. of course! 2. The only other movie Thora Birch did that I liked was Now and Then. 3. Moceanu was my favorite gymnast and hell yes! to Kerri Strug (they did some kind of thing on all seven of them recently, did you see it?) 4. We weren’t allowed to watch it in class, in fact they wouldn’t even tell us the verdict. We were all glued to our walkmans between classes and during lunch just to find out. 5. I wish that I could have experienced Nirvana when Cobain was alive. 6. I vaguly remember that problem, but I had so many that i just tossed them. 7. I’ve had that song in my head since I wrote this post. 8. 90210 was the best, but I’ll give you a pass because you watched Party of Five and MSCL (one of the most baffling cancelations EVER!). 9. You do not get a pass on this. 10. um… yeah… I’m gonna need you to work tomorrow.
