I almost had a complete melt down last night. I was using my work computer decided to take a short break and do so blog stuff, I was working on my test blog but decided I’d rather do some commenting instead so I went to my blog. And it looked like this:
Which for obvious reasons had me freaking out, as this is not what it was supposed to look at. So I tried going to the layout page to rearrange the widgets, only there the widgets were still perfectly in order. So I thought maybe I accidently did something to this template instead of my test blog so I went to my personal computer to download the template I had saved. When I logged into my blog on my mac I saw this:
(I took the pic too fast and it was still loading which is why there is no font on the sidebars.)
This completely baffled me. I uploaded my template anyway and everything was still the same. So I emailed Lori from Imagination Designs and Pure Imagination (who designed my fabulous blog, among other fabulous blogs) and she sent me my original template. When I uploaded that everything was fine, just my widgets were out of place.
When I started moving my widgets back into place everything got all messed up again! I was so confused! But then it occurred to me that it had to be a widget that was causing the problem. So I went and found the offending widget, removed it and voilà! Problem solved!
If I wouldn’t have been sitting at my work computer I never would have gone on to my blog using Internet Explorer because on all other computers I use Firefox, and I never would have seen this problem. It’s bad enough that it was like that for 2 days, it could have been like that for weeks before I would have noticed, if ever!
The Point: When you make changes or add widgets or whatever, take a second to check out what it looks like in other browsers (mainly IE cause they are the funny one) to make sure that everything works and looks right.
Also, since I was going through all this trouble anyway I decided not to wait until Bloggiesta next weekend to upload my new two column template. Stop by and tell me what you think!

I really like it! It looks big and clean and the pictures are nice and huge! I remember how badly I wanted 3 columns, but now I’m excited to go back to 2. I think before I really wanted to add a bunch of stuff to my blog, but now that doesn’t seem necessary. Thank God for Lori! She’s amazing! I’m so glad you figured out the IE thing out- too much Internet stress yesterday! So glad today is hanging out at Barnes and Noble and book club tonight- I need time to de-stress!
Thanks. I need to destress too. We’ll have a great time!
As if I don’t have enough blog stuff to worry about! Let’s just make a pact that if someone’s blog is all weird, we tell them. Like having toilet paper on your shoe. I use Safari so your blog has seemed A-Ok to me..
That sounds like a deal! I use firefox on my mac, but I did check safari when I saw firefox was ok. It was really just internet explorer, which I know not a lot of ppl use, but still, I want it to look right.
Yeah I’ve noticed that with my blog on IE. It totally messes with one of my widget thingys. My blog roll one. No idea how to fix it because I really want to keep it on my blog.
Yeah I just deleted the widget cause it wasn’t that important and mine was really messed up. But I don’t know that a lot of people still use IE so leaving it shouldn’t be that big of an issue.
Wow, thanks for the info. I have trouble with my commenting on my blog and it never occurred to me that it might be a widget causing trouble. I’ll have to check it out now.
I dislike IE because it has lots of weird issues you don’t find on other browsers but the site I use for work only works on IE so I have no choice. :(
Thanks for the info. I checked Internet Explorer on mine, and it’s totally messed up. But now I don’t know how to fix it :( Dang IE!
I know it! I wish they weren’t so complicated.
The main thing I have noticed is I can see my followers or I can’t. Great advice but it can stress you out if you don’t know how to fix.
I love 2 colomns, I will stroll down a blog with 2, when it is 3, I find it overwelming.
Yeah I was a little stressed, stupid IE!
It’s good to hear your thoughts on 2 column vs 3 column. I never really thought about it that way, but I’m glad I made the switch!
I think your blog looks great!
I use google chrome at home and firefox at work but I’ve never looked at my blog on IE. I would never have thought of that happening though!
Yeah, it took me by complete surprise! But it’s all good now!
I like it! And I can’t decide if I want to move to two columns.
So far I’m very happy with it and other people seem to like it too so it’s a win-win.
I’m glad you got it all fixed! I like the 2 columns much better than 3 columns, but I always have with any blogs, not just yours. And that, of course, is just my opinion. You know I’ll still read your blog no matter what it looks like! :D
3 columns doesn’t bother me, but I noticed that I tend to only pay attention to one side of it, which is why I considered 2 columns. Plus it’s a bit cleaner which is also what I wanted.
I used to do freelance web design, and browser quirks make me *insane*. IE is the least forgiving of the browsers, and handles divs a bit differently, so things that look good in Chrome and Firefox might be misaligned there.

Yeah, that’s what I discovered :(
