Comment Reply Emails – Yay or Nay?

July 3, 2013 Random Thoughts on Books and Blogging 11

Random Thoughts on Books and Blogging is my opportunity to discuss my bookish and blogging thoughts, whenever I feel like!

Do you love or hate comment reply emails?

I’ve been considering turning on comment reply email notification and I was wondering how others felt about it.

Personally, I like when I get an email with a reply to a comment I made. It’s nice because it’s hard to keep track of those who do respond to comments directly on their blog and those that don’t. I also forget to check back a lot of times.

As much as I like the emailed comment reply I do worry that it might be too much. I get a ton of emails, and I’m sure you do too. I don’t want to be the one email that pushes someone over the edge!

Anyways, since using it doesn’t really affect me, I want to know from YOU if this is something you want. Let me know in the comments what you think!

I personally don’t like it that email follow ups are sent automatically and would much prefer the option to do so.

Well, not quite true, I just find it annoying when I get notifications of every comment made and as a result every reply made. May sound awful but it can get ridiculous when you get an email notification that X thanks Y for leaving a comment only to receive notification that Y has sent X a reply thanking them for their thanks – and believe me i have had this happen.

I’ve never had that happen to me, but I can see how that would be annoying to get an email for every comment made. That is way too many emails! If I decide to do this I will be sure to be careful what kind of reply system I use.

Er, as a Disqus user, I think my commenters do get an automatic email reply. But I like that, because I am like you – I never remember to check back unless it’s something I was REALLY excited about or I’ve gotten an email for it… and it feels nice knowing that yes, the blogger did note and acknowledge my comment. I don’t like the Livefyre system though, which sends you an email for every comment that’s been made after yours. I think that is the one that is too much. (But if you’re unsure, your system does allow people to check the “notify me of follow-up comments” box. You should be good to go with that :D).

Yeah checking back is hard, sometimes I wish blogging was like Facebook and I would just get a notification or something! Not really sure how to make that work though…

I’ve never seen the ones that email you all comments but that is definitely not what I’m looking for because that would be annoying. I just want my reply to be emailed, nothing more.

I have mixed feelings. Let’s be honest, there are great comments (like the one you left on mine today) but there area also comments that don’t really require a response.

What if I go to your blog and leave a comment that says: “Great review.” All you can really say back is “thanks.” And then I say “you’re welcome.”

I don’t think every comment I leave requires a response. And if I get a response, am I supposed to go back to the blog and leave a response to the response???

My solution is that (if possible) I email back the people who left a comment that needs a response and the others I just respond to on my blog.

I didn’t think about that at all, but that’s a really good point. I don’t want to send out an email that just says “thanks” or whatever because that would be annoying.

I wonder if there is a way I can control that when I leave comments. Or maybe I’ll just have to be pickier when I respond to comments, but then I feel bad if I respond to some and not all. (I realize I shouldn’t feel bad, but I do.)

Honestly, I never go back to check if a reply has been made to one of my comments. It never occurs to me. I try not to ask questions during my comments and if I do have a question I tend to just email you directly or look it up myself.
