Top Ten Tuesday: Words/Topics That Make Me NOT Pick Up a Book

July 23, 2013 Top Ten Tuesday 27

TTT

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by the awesome people at The Broke and Bookish, who love lists as much as I do!

Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make You NOT pick up a book (opposite of April 30 topic!)

I think I’m pretty liberal when it comes to picking out books, but there are definitely some I stay away from.

1. Non Fiction

You could be telling me about an awesome book, and I could be really into it, but as soon as you say the word “non-fiction” I am immediately uninterested.

2. Werewolves, or any other shapeshifter

I’m not really into werewolves or shapeshifters. If there in the book I don’t mind but if they are the main focus of the book I’m not likely to read it.

3. “Terrifying”

If it’s been blurbed as terrifying or “it will give you nightmares” I want no part of it.

4. Cheating

I don’t like reading books where the main character cheats on his/her significant other. If some douchebag cheats on the main character and they break up because of it is fine, but the main character doing it bothers me.

5. Girl needs to find a new guy/lose her virginity so her friends pay someone to go out with her/have sex with her.

I don’t understand this one at all and I feel like this is becoming a thing, and I don’t want it to become a thing.

6. Erotic Fiction

I’ve read a few and they were ok, but not really for me.

7. Aliens

I am not a fan of aliens at all. Even if the aliens are people-like (e.g. Cinder) I don’t really like them. At all.

8. Zombies

I cannot handle zombies. At. All. They are weird and gross and freak me out.

8. High Fantasy

I’ve read what I consider to be “fantasy lite” and liked it fine, but I’ll be hard pressed to read a high fantasy book.

We are SO alike. Though I can handle “Terrifying” and “Aliens” occasionally. A no-no for me would also be the infamous “Love triangle” (though I can tolerate a small amount of it if need be). And if the blurb goes “lonely girl endowed with powers falls for new, mysterious schoolmate who holds the key to her diversity” or the likes, I can barely restraint myself from smashing my PC screen. Urgh.

I don’t generally mind love triangles, but I prefer the “fake” variety where you pretty much know who is going to win. Not really a fan of “lonely girl …” myself!

  2. Jessica@a GREAT read

7 & 8 are hits or misses for me, as I do like some alien and zombie books. Zombies I am really picky with and really, the only alien series I read is Jennifer L. Aremntrout’s Lux books! Reminds me a tad of Roswell–which was one of my fave shows way back when!

Good list though! Agree with quite a lot of those, even if I don’t tend to see much of that in my reads! Still wouldn’t want them there either!

    Here’s my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

I’ve heard good things about Armentrout’s books but aliens are just weird to me. I’d rather stick to other things :)

  3. Irish

Our lists are pretty similar, I too don’t see “terrifying” as a selling point. If its going to scare me then I will probably not read it. I like sleep. lol And I don’t get how people who turn into animals is sexy and fun…I’ve read a couple of exceptions but its far and few between and the shape shifting aspect usually isn’t the dominant storyline.

I didn’t take part in this one, but if I had to create a list of topics that would make me say no to a book it would look very similar to yours. The only differences are that I will read non-fiction (although not often and usually only if its history non-fiction) and I love high fantasy novels.

    Great list!

High fantasy novels just confuse me with all that’s going on but I totally get that people love them.

I don’t like cheating either but lately I am also overwhelmingly turned off by triangles. Which is probably why I don’t read as much YA as I used to

  6. Kate- Midnight Book Girl

I am the same with several things on your list- especially the cheating! I don’t what the whole paying someone to take your friend’s virginity thing is about, but I am on the bandwagon to stop that from becoming a thing!
